Street racing in San Bernardino the other night caused the death of a 25-year old woman who was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

San Bernardino Police reported that three cars were racing down a street when one vehicle tried to go around another one and crashed into an oncoming car, driven by a 25-year old woman.  The woman’s 3-year old son was also in the vehicle; he is in stable condition. The wrongway driver died at the scene.

The police believe alcohol played a part in this fatal accident.  The racer could face child endangerment charges.

Remember a few months ago when a 27-year old bicyclist, was killed by a high-school student, racing on Highland streets with another vehicle?  The vehicle drove across traffic and ended on the shoulder where he crashed into a man who was riding his bike.  The impact threw him into a field where he died.

At the time, none of the students were arrested, pending an investigation.  Once the investigation was completed, a trial was held.  Recently, the two 18-year old racers, were charged with vehicular manslaughter.  They both face a single felony count.

Again, my sympathies go out to the family of the bicyclist.

A man wanted to be a professional cyclist but that dream ended recently when he was killed by a high school senior, who lost control of his car while racing down the street with passengers and another vehicle on the wrong side of the road.  His car went across traffic and ended on the shoulder where the man was riding alone.  The impact threw him into the field where he died.

The high school students were not arrested, pending an investigation.  None of the students was injured.  Investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved.  It seems racing is common on the desolate stretch of road.

My heart goes out to the man’s family.
