A study by the Office of Traffic Safety found that about 50% of all drivers are not aware that lane splitting by motorcycle riders is legal in California. The month of May has been made, “Motorcycle Awareness Safety Month” in order to call attention the dangers that motorcyclists face while on the road.
Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration state that motorcyclists are 25 times more likely to die in an accident than passenger car occupants and are 5 times more likely to suffer an injury.
The following are some basic safety measures for a motorcyclist to take while on the road:
· Always wear a helmet
· Do not ride drunk
· Never assume that a passenger car driver sees you
A motorcyclist has the same rights as any other driver on the road. If you are injured because of another person’s negligent actions, contact an experienced San Bernardino Personal Injury attorney who will help you receive compensation for your damages and medical expenses.

A National survey released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in spite of all the legal bans, texting by drivers keeps increasing, especially among younger motorists – ages 21 through 24.
The survey goes on to say that many drivers don’t think it’s dangerous when they do it – only when others do. Apparently the new laws have not discouraged motorists from texting or using their cellphones while driving. At any given moment, there is someone who is texting, emailing, surfing the Web or otherwise using a hand-held electronic device.
The survey goes on to report that in 2010 more than 3,000 deaths on the highways were caused by driver distraction, including eating while driving and thumbing emails.
Let’s hope the New Year includes abiding by the rules because the life you save may just be your own. If you are or someone you love is injured in an accident caused because of driver distraction, contact an experienced San Bernardino Personal Injury attorney who will fight for and protect your rights.

In a recent news article The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that traffic deaths linked to distracted driving fell 6% compared to the previous year. There were 5,474 deaths in 2009 compared to 5,838 the year before.
The year 2009 saw the lowest fatality and injury rates – fatalities declined in all categories, including motorcycles. The Department of Transportation reported, “America’s roads are the safest they’ve ever been. But they must be safer. And we will not rest until they are.”
In California, texting and talking on a phone without a handset device is illegal while driving. The Auto Club recently reported that texting while at the wheel has doubled since California banned this action almost two years ago.
