A man riding a bicycle along Highway 189 in Crestline the other evening became a victim of a disabling traffic accident. As the 32-year old man was peddling away on a road without a shoulder, a pickup truck came up behind him honking his horn and flashing his lights. The bicyclist had no place to pull over and sped up; the truck stayed on his tail.
The bicyclist came to a curve and tried to slow down, but his brakes locked up and he was thrown off the bike. The accident caused him to break his collar bone in two places. In addition, he received a gash above his eye, which required nine stitches. The bike was damaged. The trucker did not stop. Moments later a motorist stopped and offered the man his cell phone.
Crest Forest Fire paramedics and deputies from the Sheriff’s department were on the scene. The bicyclist was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released. It was determined that he might need surgery to repair his clavicle. According to California Highway Patrol, the truck driver’s actions did not constitute a chargeable crime. I hope the bicyclist contacts an experienced Personal Injury attorney who will discuss his options with him and hopefully get him some compensation for his medical expenses and loss of wages.

A 32-year old woman, was on the north side of Highway 18 in Crestline a few months ago when an car accident took her life. She was driving behind a truck. A truck on the south side, sideswiped the truck on the north side causing his cargo, wooden roof trusses, to fly off the truck and crash through the windshield of the woman’s car. The woman lost control of the car, hit a stone pillar and ended up in an embankment. She died at the scene.
After an investigation, it was determined that the truck on the south side crossed the double yellow line when he waved to a friend on the side of the road. He may have been driving without a wide-load permit. The driver of the truck was charged with vehicular manslaughter and is awaiting a November hearing.
My condolences go out to the family of the woman.
