A 28-year old parolee who was stopped by Fontana police officers recently tried to run them over.

After the officers identified themselves to him, he put his vehicle into reverse and tried to get away.  One of the officers was able to dive out of the way while the other was hit.  As the vehicle sped away, the officers fired at the man, hitting him in his hand.

Police chased the vehicle until it crashed into another vehicle and stopped.

Unfortunately, the other vehicle was driven by a pregnant woman.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital as a precautionary measure.  She and her unborn baby are expected to be fine.  The officer who was hit was also taken to a nearby hospital and released.  The parolee was also treated for his injuries.

He was booked into jail on suspicion of attempted homicide of a police officer, felony evading and violating parole.

As a reminder, properly used child safety seats can reduce childhood deaths by as much a 70 percent.  It is unfortunate to note that 9 out of 10 car seats are incorrectly installed. Thousands of young children are killed or severely injured in car accidents each year.  It is important to keep your child safe when riding in a vehicle.  The type of seat your child needs depends on his or her size and age.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that all infants ride rear-facing.  This includes the day they come home from the hospital after birth.  All infants and toddlers should ride this way until they are at least two years old or until they reach a certain height and weight – ask your pediatrician.

As the child gets older – toddler to preschooler (2 years old+), they should ride in a convertible seat that faces forward with a safety harness.  Younger school-aged children should ride in a booster seat facing forward.    When children are old enough, they can use the safety of the vehicle seat belt for protection.

The law requires children under the age of 14 to be properly protected while sitting in an automobile.  If your child is injured in an automobile accident due to improper child restraints, the manufacturer of the car seat may be held liable.  Contact a San Bernardino Personal Injury attorney who is qualified and experienced with child car seat laws – who will explain your legal rights and options to you.

If you are involved in a rollover accident, you must check your vehicle very carefully – auto product defects can lead to severe injuries or even death.

Make sure you or a mechanic examines the roof to see if it caved in.  Statistics show that when the roof pushes inward towards the dashboard, often times the occupant suffers catastrophic injuries to his or her head or neck.

If a passenger is ejected, carefully check the seat belt, especially if you are positive that the passenger was wearing it.  A seat belt defect may have caused the belt to unlatch, giving the passenger no protection.

If you or a loved one has suffered personal injuries as a result of a rollover accident, contact an experienced San Bernardino Personal Injury attorney to prove or disprove your assumptions regarding a possible product defect.

Can you believe it’s been almost a month since a 47-year old Ontario man driving a Mercedes drove into a coned-off construction zone and hit an earth-moving machine on the San Bernardino Freeway?  His actions killed a 20-year old woman and injured five other people.

According to California Highway Patrol, the 47-year old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and vehicular manslaughter.  It seems the freeway’s two right-hand lanes were marked for construction when the driver veered into them, hitting a stationary machine and worker on it.

The worker was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries.  The Mercedes had six people in it; five were hospitalized with minor to major injuries.  One 20-year old woman died from injuries sustained.

I hope the family will contact an experienced San Bernardino Personal Injury attorney who can investigate the details of this accident and determine if compensation for their loss is available to them.

Many of my friends and clients spend the holiday season in Las Vegas.  I want to urge you to take caution when you are on the stretch of Interstate 15 - beginning in San Bernardino County and ending in Clark County, Nevada.  It is not only one of the busiest roads in the United States, but also one of the most dangerous.

According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, more than eight million drivers come across that road every year, causing more fatalities than any other road in the country, let alone California.  The Auto Club suggests that speeding is the number one problem, followed by drinking and inattentiveness.  In addition, motorists need to wear their seatbelts at all times.

I know you are in a hurry to get to Las Vegas, but I urge you to observe the speed limit and look all around you, especially on that specific stretch of road.  The life you save may be your own.

A young boy walking in a crosswalk to school in Fontana was hit and injured by an automobile recently.  It was reported that the driver did not stop for a crossing guard holding up a STOP sign when she struck the child.

The child sustained a road rash and bruising to his hand and hip.  The driver was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.  According to California Vehicle Code Section 21950, “The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.”  In addition, she received a ticket for driving at an unsafe speed.  According to California Vehicle Code Section 21950, “The driver of a vehicle approaching a pedestrian within any marked or unmarked crosswalk shall exercise all due care and shall reduce the speed of a vehicle or take any other action relating to the operating of the vehicle as necessary to safeguard the safety of the pedestrian.”

I hope this young man recovers quickly.  I also hope that the family of this young boy seeks the advice of an experienced San Bernardino Personal Injury attorney to be compensated for medical expenses, pain and suffering and any other damages that occurred.

California Highway Patrol reported that a 21-year old Bakersfield man, a passenger in the car, was killed in the desert town of Trona recently.  Police believe the driver may have been drunk when he crashed the car going around a sharp curve at an unknown speed; he lost control of the vehicle and it overturned at least once.

The driver was arrested for possible driving under the influence of alcohol.  The accident was not discovered for over three hours due to no cell phone coverage in the area.

My heart goes out to the family of this young man who was killed.
