On any given day and at any given time, emergency rooms everywhere see lots of patients in a short period of time – many of which are dealing with serious injuries and need immediate care.

With all the budget cuts today that include understaffing in hospitals, many emergency room personnel often lack appropriate training and can make serious errors when diagnosing that sometimes harm the patient.

Examples of emergency room errors include, but are not limited to:

·     Misdiagnosis or failure to diagnose heart attack, stroke and other illnesses

·     Surgical errors

·     Waiting room delays that prevent timely treatment of injury

·     Medication errors

If you have been injured, or if you have lost a loved one due to an emergency room error, contact a San Bernardino Personal Injury attorney for dedicated and aggressive legal representation, who will represent you in your medical malpractice case.  Remember, staff members and ER doctors should be held accountable for their mistakes.

Did you know that hospital infections are the fourth largest cause of death in the United States? Did you know that approximately 5% of all hospital patients get an infection while in the hospital? Finally, did you know that many infections acquired in a hospital could have been prevented or treated with the appropriate antibiotics?

An infection can cause a simple medical condition to become more serious, such as severe pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis and other illnesses.

When a patient acquires an infection that goes undiagnosed or untreated, sepsis and septic shock can result in serious injury or death. An infection that is diagnosed and treated quickly can prevent significant harm to the patient.

If you were a patient in a hospital and believe that medical negligence led to your hospital-acquired infection, contact a San Bernardino Personal Injury attorney who has experience in medical malpractice cases to determine if the hospital was at fault for not diagnosing and treating your infection in a timely manner.

Doctors are not the only ones who can make a critical error that leads to serious injuries or death while caring for their patient – dentists can also.  Dental malpractice occurs when a dentist fails to properly diagnose or treat an oral health condition.  It can occur while performing a routine cleaning or undertaking a tooth extraction.

Dentists, like any medical professional, must be sure to address their work with care and attention. Examples of some of the most common results of dental malpractice include:

·     Nerve damage

·     Unnecessary tooth extraction or wrong tooth extraction

·     Failure to diagnose oral cancer or periodontal disease

·     Complications due to negligent work

Dental malpractice cases are often complex.  It is helpful to have documented written evidence in order to prove your case and file a claim against the dentist.

It is critical that the dentist be held responsible for mistakes that occur.  If you were injured as a result of your dentist’s malpractice, contact a San Bernardino Personal Injury attorney who has been successful in dental malpractice cases – one that can help you secure compensation for your injuries, expenses, and pain and suffering.

Doctors, nurses and health care professionals are held to the highest standard of care for patient safety in diagnosis and treatment. However, mistakes are sometimes made.  Has your doctor failed you?

When a health care provider fails to meet those standards, a patient may suffer an injury as a result.  Mistakes are sometimes made when there is a misdiagnosis, delayed treatment, medication error, and infections arising after surgery, a birth injury and being sent home too soon – to name just a few examples.

It is not easy to prove malpractice and suing your doctor is not an easy process.

If you suffered serious complications because of medical negligence, contact a San Bernardino Personal Injury attorney who has successfully represented victims in medical malpractice cases by negotiating settlements for injury, expenses and pain and suffering.

Are you questioning the care your physician gave you during the birth of your child?  Did his care include a birth defect for your new baby?

If you believe your unborn baby may have been in distress during delivery, ask yourself if there were warning signs.

·     Did the fetal heart monitor strips show abnormal readings of the heartbeat?

·     Was there mechanical trauma from the improper use of forceps causing the transmission of

oxygen to the baby’s brain to be hindered?

·     Were there umbilical cord problems?

If you believe there were warning signs present and your doctor or nurse negligently failed to realize that your baby was in distress, contact an experienced San Bernardino Personal Injury attorney who has handled and been successful in malpractice and birth defect cases.

Many of us have heard about someone who goes into the hospital for a common surgical procedure where something goes wrong.  A study conducted by the Institute of Medicine several years ago stated that approximately 40,000 to 100,000 patients die annually because of medical error.

Medical errors include, but are not limited to:

·     Diagnosis – failure to diagnose a problem or stating the wrong diagnosis

·     Cognitive errors – a physician diagnosing a problem without the proper knowledge – outside their specialty

·     Medication – a bad handwriting can result in the drug store filling the wrong prescription; a nurse can give a patient the wrong dosage.  Medication errors can cause injury or death.

·     Surgical – Leaving a sponge or instrument inside the patient; performing the wrong surgery

·     The wrong patient – When a patient’s record is misplaced, a patient can receive the wrong treatment.

If you believe a family member has been the victim of a hospital error, contact a San Bernardino Personal Injury attorney who is successful in hospital error or malpractice claims – and will help you understand your rights.

Any surgery, regardless of how big or small, can be potentially dangerous to a patient.

Most of the time an elective surgery or in-and-out surgical procedure has a low incidence of complications – unless there is surgical negligence that takes place.  Negligence during a surgery is oftentimes hard to prove.

When negligence occurs as a result of inferior post-operative care or a failure to diagnose a problem, a good San Bernardino Personal Injury attorney can investigate for you.  A patient who dies from complications after the surgery is another story.  A review of the medical records will take place to determine if negligence did take place.

If you or a loved one had surgery and complications took place soon after, you may be the victim of medical malpractice.  Contact an experienced San Bernardino Personal Injury attorney who will review your medical records to determine if you are entitled to compensation for your injuries and expenses.

The U. S. Department of Health and Human Services is investigating the possibility of bad patient care at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center stemming from a patient complaint made to them.  The nature of the complaint is confidential.

Medicare Services is checking for possible violations regarding patient health and safety.  Examples include the quality of nursing and pharmacy services.  Currently, Arrowhead doctors have complained about the hospital lacking a proper system to review incidents that result in patient injury or death – alleging incompetence in some departments – failing to investigate when several different errors in surgery were made.

Let us hope any problems at the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center have been taken care of.  If you are a patient at this hospital or any hospital and a medical error is made to you, please contact an experienced Personal Injury attorney who can review your options with you.

Recently the Orange County Register reported that a surgeon at Children’s Hospital operated on the wrong part of a child’s body.   It seems this is the third incident in four years.

The child was having a small fold of tissue behind the upper lip surgically loosened.  Instead of performing this procedure, the surgeon loosened tissue underneath the child’s tongue.  Luckily, the child will not experience any long-term harm.  Even though the hospital had rules in place to avoid mistakes such as this one, it happened anyway.

The hospital advised that it would work to implement process improvements and refine policies and procedures on an as needed basis.
