Now that the warm weather is on its way, more and more people will be taking their boats out for a relaxing day on the lake – perhaps Big Bear Lake.  Others, because of the economy and high gas prices, will remain at home.

California has the third highest number of registered boats in the United States.  This is not surprising since California has approximately ten thousand miles of shoreline.  Statistics show that a substantial number of boating accidents, including injuries and fatalities happened in the Inland Empire – more than 60%.

Even though the operator of the boat is responsible for his or her actions, the most common cause of boating accidents is operator negligence.  Not paying attention or unsafe speeds can lead to accidents with other boats or even individuals on jet skis or wave runners – not to mention swimmers.  In addition, alcohol is a common cause of boating fatalities.

If you are injured due to the negligence of a boat operator, you may be able to file a claim against the operator for your injuries and/or damages.  Contact an experienced San Bernardino Personal Injury attorney to see if you can seek financial recovery.

Those enjoying the lovely climate in Lake Havasu recently got more than they bargained for.  A 29-year old Huntington Beach man, was enjoying the water by sitting in an inner tube and being pulled by a boat.  Something caused him to fall out of the tube. While waiting for the boat to return and pick him up, another boat, traveling about 40 mph hit him.

The boat fled down the lake without stopping.  The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is asking any witnesses to this incident to come forward by calling the Colorado River Sheriff’s Station at 760-326-9200.  The boat is described as red, about 30 feet long with white stripes.  The driver is a heavy-set man with a mustache, wearing a baseball cap.  A blond-haired woman was a passenger.

Paramedics took the man to Havasu Landing Marina, where he was pronounced dead.  My sympathies go out to the family of the man that died.
